Saw a black bear as we were walking home today. Just wandering the lawns.

The paper about the airburst set off an Akira-like nuclear fireball of controversy. Lots of methodological issues, potential image manipulation (!) and some of the authors have a rather suspicious obsession with biblical literalism. retractionwatch.com/2021/10/01

Fascinating thing about being a Quaker-Jew with a wife raised Episcopalian: I learn about all these bits of Judaism that are straight-up *claimed* in Christianity as "things Jesus innovated". We'll see them in a Jewish context, and then she'll tell me "yeah, in Sunday School, they represent that as something from Jesus, not from Judaism".

Like, wow, no, he did not invent the Sh'ma, *Mark*.

A grey rainy morning here in Chicago. Flying back out today, but this is weather that nourishes me, and feels very on the nose for my current thoughts and feelings about mortality.

There's a small set of media that I can't watch/read/listen to etc. without sobbing.

Greta Gerwig's film Lady Bird, Garnet Rogers' song The Lost Ones, walkingnorth's webtoon Always Human.

Probably some others. But those are top of mind and top of heart right now.

You know what makes the best still-life? Flowers. Better than fruit, better than boxes. They're *really fun* to draw.

There's this entire Twitter genre of historical-explainer threads that are _very slightly_ wrong, not in any substantive ways, not in ways that change the essential point, but in "someone half-remembered or half-understood this, but is good at storytelling" ways.

And what does this mean for me? Nothing. I nod and pass on by. Forget it, Jake, it's Twitter.

Bob Ross: Talent is a pursued interest. Everything you can practice you can do.
Me: 😭 😭😭😭😭😭 Thank you, Bob!

Hey so I am obsessing (OBSESSING) over this comic. It feels like what I love about Mignola's work, with a softer humanist edge. The creator cites Miyazaki as an influence, too.

Apparently there's a print version of it in the works, so gonna get that when I can.

Drawing again. Not quite ready to share. But it feels good to do again.

It shouldn’t have to happen to you for it to matter to you

The folks in my Discord have decided today to make pride-flag themed variants of the logo and I could not be happier. Real "community!" moment.

You can't link to specific youtube comments, but you can report them, if you'd like a clear a sense of what youtube comments are worth.

Just typo'ed a servername while reconnecting to an IRC channel, and accidentally put in libera dot net instead of the correct dot chat, and you wouldn't believe where I found myself: Back on Freenode. Who've apparently secured that domain, and are using it to try to trick people back on to their services.

Remember when you could easily run out of internet and then go outside?

I really need to convey the shape of the hull here. Constitution doesn't have a lot of tumblehome, but this looks like a floating brick.
