Sometimes I feel like humans are almost exactly pessimal at picking leaders.

covid ; climate ; +

“And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.”

"And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.”

"And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed."

~Kitty O'Meara

Things that are looking pretty broadly reasonable right now:

- Nationalize, + plan for a managed decline of, airline & oil industries
- Universal basic income (or better yet, universal basic outcomes)
- Reversing decades of cuts to public healthcare and education
- Internet = a public utility and universal right

Amazon. Again.

Global pandemic is a windfall for them. Don’t feed their greed.
"even though Amazon is encouraging workers to wash their hands, it’s not giving them enough time to do so, Bailey said. The nearest bathroom is a 2-3-minute walk in each direction"

LRT: Hey, if you can and if you weren't already, boycott Amazon.

Approximately every employee under the sun: We are curtailing hours or closing stores to avoid worsening this already-dire situation, we will do our best to keep our employees paid during this difficult time.

Jeff Bezos:

Remember how Trump ordered the National Security Council's entire global health security unit (including a renowned pandemics expert team) to be shut down in May 2018?

Trump: "I'm a business person, I don't like having thousands of people around when you don't need them. When we need them, we can get them back very quickly."

Well, as it turns out, the administration cannot actually reassemble such a team "very quickly".

English "be a man" = be tough

Yiddish "zay a mentsh" = be kind, be generous, do the right thing

The new Emma film is

So very bad. Allie and I bolted out of the theater to shout at each other all the problems we had with it. Every scene had problems ranging from historical flaws to broken semiotics to messed up emotional beats.

Allie said it best: "Better to be without Jane Austen than to misapply her as this did."

@shoq With Republicans trying to oust Dorsey and turn Twitter into Gab now more than ever we need folks to move over to the Fediverse! /cc @Gargron

Dreamt about dolphins. Not an animal that has visited my dreams before.

Today, in Travis Gonna Travis news:

I’ll bet a grand that the only design, engineering or safety auditing in this whole process is to make sure there’s plenty of shell corporations between Travis, his undocumented employees and the families of the people who are going to die of food poisoning.

just came across the phrase "in silico" (i. e. computer simulation), as opposed to "in vitro" (lit. "in glass", like in a petri dish) and "in vivo" (experiments with living organisms)

Computer Secrets!

💻 Most computers flower only once every 100 years, but some flower and bear fruit each year if well watered and cared for

💻 The opposite of a computer is ghosts

💻 We all just pretend UNIX exists

💻 Processor cycles are marketing hype. We have all been on a 24-hour processor cycle since the early 1990s

💻 The Bible was originally written and compiled in QBASIC

💻 "USB keys" is the scientific term for computer egg sacs

💻 Variables with $ in their names are only usable by premium coders

according to my research, YouTube could remove its recommendation algorithm entirely tomorrow and it would still be one of the largest sources of far-right propaganda and radicalization online.

Beware of totalizing relationships - with people and with products and services.

In both cases, institutional experts thoroughly ignored centuries, and arguably millenia, of *successful* management of common resources in order to justify stealing those resources for the rich.
