At the end of the day Google is becoming so dominant on the web that they practically *are* the web, so you either use Google products or you avoid touching a computer. I can't quit Google entirely (Chrome DevTools, GMaps, YouTube are the big ones for me).

How do you deal with something that builds amazing products but also does it in kind of a sleazy way? And maybe is becoming way too powerful? I suppose you become a tech vegan sneaking occasional bites of cheese pizza.

Words matter. The news media's insistence on the term "migrant" instead of "refugee" and "immigrant", even when the UNHCR is involved, is destructive, propagandistic, and must be resisted.

"Art in the age of mechanical reproduction" GET USED TO IT PAINTING come and join music and theater down here in the "what am I if I am reproduced" thorns.

IT DOESN’T NEED AMP. It’s entirely static, is as fast as or faster than AMP sites, and is served from a fast global CDN with aggressive caching.

I’m INCREDIBLY tired of Google abusing their position as the global search monopoly to push their tech on sites or fear being demoted.

I launched a new blog this week. It's stupidly fast, uses zero external JS or CSS resources, is responsive, and supports modern features many sites don’t like dark style support. But Google just emailed me saying they might deprioritize it on Google because it doesn’t use AMP.

Indigenous people!

Please share this and reply and be my friend! Let's create a community on here where we know we have someone who gets it!

I'll start, I'm Ojibwe. Raised away from the tribe, but am a full member now as an adult.

(If not indigenous, please still share, I wanna reach others)

Transition, age, why now

What I need someone to tell me, so I tell myself. Maybe you need to hear it too:

You didn't transition late. You didn't transition early. You transitioned when some combination of necessary conditions were met for you to transition. There may have been other conditions which would have allowed you to transition at other times, perhaps sooner, perhaps later but these were the ones that did. And you're here now.

Sometimes you have to go back to your musical roots. Sitting here (in Limbo…) listening to "The Harder They Come" and feeling like I know where I come from.

Mauna Kea

I think a big problem is that people of European descent have no analogous sacred places.

For example, a Japanese friend of mine was confused about the situation in Hawaii, so I explained it to her like this – "How would you feel if people came to Japan from some other part of the world and decided to construct a huge building on top of Mount Fuji?" She immediately understood completely, without me needing to say more. In Japan, Fuji-san is sacred among both Buddhists and Shintoists.

But there are no such sacred locations in Western worldviews. As a result, people of European descent have no way to truly empathise with the Hawaiians. Where the Hawaiians see a sacred site and a symbol of their culture, all Europeans see is a big mountain.

Mauna Kea

Astronomy is a deep and passionate interest of mine. It has captivated me since I was a small child gazing at stars up until I was a scruffy looking postdoc receiving a PhD certificate in astrophysics. I'm saying this so you'll understand where I'm coming from when I say – the Thirty Metre Telescope (TMT) needs to be built somewhere else. They need to leave Mauna Kea alone.

There are many other places to build telescopes, and it's inexcusable that US authorities are doing their best to sweep Native Hawaiian voices under the rug. I want no part in this. Nor should anyone with even a shred of compassion.

The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world that hierarchy is the opposite of chaos.

Tonight, I drank vodka, and ate kholodnik, pkhali, pelmeni, sprat buterbrodi, chicken bazhe, a bright Russian salad, and something we improvised that was very like mushroom samsa. All this shared with good friends. I cannot ask for more. This is the world I want to build, this is what we take Sabbath to envision, and then redouble our efforts to make real.

Amazon worker strike

Reminder: the Prime Day strike is Monday July 15 and Tuesday July 16. Amazon is going to offer some incredible deals on those two days, while continuing to treat its workers badly. Don't take the bait! Support the worker strike by refusing to buy from Amazon for the next two days.

List of kiwi farm instances

and their ip range:

Do boost and block.
Serial harasser and dangerous people from kiwi farm don't belong on our platform

Random observations: before cars, street intersections were places you were likely to have social interactions with your neighbors.

so, yesterday, i put together a list of nazi instances i had blocked. that post has been boosted over 60 times. that's cool, i'm glad i did something useful.

but i can't do that kind of thing if i can't eat. my post about needing money for food has been boosted ten times.

if you appreciate and value the work i put into notifying everyone about where the fash are and you have some money to spare, please pay me.

if you can't give, please always boost.

You unlock this door with a little white pill. Beyond it is another dimension - a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of stress. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Predni Zone.

Google, politics

When Google suggests news stories on my phone, it constantly recommends horrifying sites.

You like politics? Surely you read Breitbart, RT, and Fox News. You're interested in climate change? Surely you want transparent climate change denialism. You've been reading about Mastodon? Surely you need articles that promote white supremacy and misspell "Mastadon."

If this is what I see, what is recommended to actual Republicans? Algorithms are pushing systematic hate and lies.
