Alcanivorax borkumensis is a microbe which digests crude oil. It prefers to live in oxygen-rich saltwater and is very helpful in cleaning up oil spills in ocean and coastal regions.
With enough nitrogen and phosphorus to act as fertiliser for them, these bacteria can become the dominant microbes in a contaminated area. They're just one of at least 7 known species which live off hydrocarbons, but they're probably the most prolific.
Just another of Earth's biological reflexes to help curb the damage which humans are capable of in their hubris.

Just some stuff I've learned about bike commuting over the past year or so.
So Gab has decided that their own code that they spent $5M of investor money developing is so unsalvageably bad that they're going to use Mastodon's code instead, with the added bonus of leeching off of our apps (with Gab apps being banned from app stores)
This is an early warning to fellow admins to be vigilant and domain-block them on sight, when/if they appear (unconfirmed whether they intend to federate), and to app devs to consider if blocking Gab's domains from their app is necessary.
ICANN granted Amazon.com the domain '.amazon' today, rather than the entire geographic region of the Amazon Basin.
Acts like this are colonial, obviously, but also a slap in the face to early internet promises of global representation + shared power. Its really sad.
