Hey if you like Django, Django REST Framework, and Django Channels, I wrote a thing that might interest you:
Back in the GTalk days, you could talk to your entire Google contacts list via federated XMPP.
So even back then I had way more contacts on XMPP than GNUSocial or Identica.
Google played a large role in killing off XMPP usage and the day they announced sunsetting GTalk was when I realized they're just another embrace-extend-extinguish monopolist.
Society needs self-hostable, scalable and functional alternatives to surveillance capitalist systems of manipulation and censorship.
The lack of an account migration idiom on Mastodon really is fatal, it is sincerely a thing that keeps me from recommending Mastodon to people. The http://witches.town evaporation to me was kind of like a disproof of the fediverse and I feel like maybe the fediverse dev community should have treated it as such. There needs to be a way to recover your account, "toots", and follower network if one instance goes away.
Okay so tumblr is banning rotating cubes saying it's porn and facebook banned saying "i'm gay" saying it's sexual solicitation and Twitter always seemed like it could disappear at any moment
I feel like we need to be getting ready for Mass Migration to Mastodon, which means we need to fix anything that keeps Mastodon from being usable, and there is in fact something that keeps Mastodon from being usable, there's one specific thing, it's this:
Theory: Open source software is terrible to use because design can't be parceled apart like development can. Design has to be holistic and design by committee results in awful stuff. #foss
I wrote some advice for historical games like #ThousandArrows: safety, controversial content, lowering barriers to entry, & balancing player needs against accuracy. The article focuses on gaming, but other fiction creators should find something useful too! https://jamesmendezhodes.com/blog/2018/11/10/best-practices-for-historical-gaming
We still have a tech position open at the Freedom of the Press Foundation (a nonprofit): a Sr. Software Engineer position to work on SecureDrop, the open source whistleblower platform used by 65+ media organizations, originally developed by the late Aaron Swartz.
You get paid to work
✅ from anywhere in the world
✅ on a world-changing project
✅ that's open source,
✅ stewarded by a small team
✅ that's led by a woman.
Help spreading the word is much appreciated:
"“You’re right, Paul, he overpowered a woman,” Mr. Jones interjected.
Mr. Acosta did no such thing. On Thursday, the White House News Photographers Association said it was “appalled” that the White House had distributed the Infowars clip.
“As visual journalists, we know that manipulating images is manipulating truth,” the group said in a statement. “It’s deceptive, dangerous and unethical. Knowingly sharing manipulated images is equally problematic...”"
A dictatorial regime is actively spreading misinformation to justify its punishment of those who challenge them. They're not "like facists", they're just fascists.

Transneptodon is a community for people who like stories, games, games about stories, stories about games, probably also computers, cooking, language, and definitely social justice!
